Canyons of the Escalante

This magical labyrinth is one of the scenic wonders of the west.  This region of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument cascades off the southern flank of the Aquarius Plateau, winding through a 1,000 mile maze of interconnected canyons. 

Escalante is the heart of the Colorado Plateau. These unforgiving mounds of rock and red earth kept the area remote, and the emptiness is one of it's beauties.

Waterfalls

 

 

 

 

A rare occurrence in the Canyons of the Escalante.  Summer rain storms and winter snowstorms provide unique opportunities for photography.  The 20 year occurrence October, 2006 gave us only 1 brief hour to capture the falls before they went dry.

The water from these falls on the Burr Trail flows down to  Lake Powell  providing habitat along the way for plants and animals.  

The mouth of Escalante Canyon meets Lake Powell about 70 miles south of Escalante.  That provides a lifetime of opportunities for exploring, photography, and education
